Fireworks can be fascinating, but also disturbing, and this is often evident in case of dogs. Often, these poor pets are filled with fear and stress due to the strange odor of the powder, bright lights and loud sounds. This is often seen during celebratory events such as New Year’s Day, 4th of July celebrations, Christmas, Super Bowl etc. You can follow these tips as a dog owner to keep your dog calm and relaxed during a fireworks show.
Get your dog tired
If you know when the fireworks show would be coming up, get your dog tired throughout the day with activities such as playing games, running etc. That way, before the fireworks begin, it will be drained of energy and cannot react excitedly to all those sounds and lights. Rather, it will prefer to rest in its own corner.
Prepare a safe haven
Once the fireworks begin, a few pups seem to get very tense. Thus, it is important that you close all the windows beforehand, and shut all the curtains. This can help muffle the sounds and lights to an extent. Keep the room lightson, to reduce the effects of the light outside. With more brightness, you can make your dog feel more reassured.
Also create a small, covered shelter that is pitch dark inside, where your dog can get some shelter if it wants to feel more secure. You can just put a thick blanket over the sides of your bed, to get the underside dark, and make your dog feel more comfortable. Have food and water present there, to ensure convenience as well.
Keep it distracted
Keep enough distractions on, to ensure that your dog cannot focus on the fireworks. You can turn the music on, playing some loud tracks in a playlist, or keep the TV on to occupy your dog’s ears with different sounds. Also keep its favorite foods and chew toys around, to keep your canine friend engaged with something or other.
Stay calm yourself
You are its owner, and your dog will look towards you for some guidance and reassurance. When you stay relaxed yourself while the fireworks show is on, your dog will imitate you and stay calm as well. Play with it, or just keep it busy with its own things. If you check on your dog every now and then, it can sense your anxiety and get more restless.
