Giving liver jerky dog treats at home improves the dogs diet quality. It will go crazy over these treats. There are many dog treat readily available, but these fantastic treats can be made at home without mess. The best part of these liver dog treats is they have no additives, fillers, preservatives or doggy ingredients. It is pure protein.
How to prepare liver dog treats
A dehydrator or an oven will help in preparing liver dog treats. Having dehydrated chicken, kidney, and heart or liver is appealing to dogs. Using lamb or ox liver is good as it can be left to freeze for a week and it kills parasites if any before you dehydrate the meat.
Remember, dehydrated liver means shrinking a lot. Looking at a pack of liver will give a belief that the quantity is much. However, with dehydration it comes around 600 grams from 1 kg of liver. It lasts for a week and is good to give a treat for your dogs for their best behavior during training or walks.
· Take 500 grams liver piece, it can be anything, lamb, ox or goat liver. Use any organ meat even hearts and kidneys. This liver jerky dog treat does not take more than 45 minutes, besides the meat boiling and drying time.
· Make small liver pieces, easy to bite as suitable dog treats.
Step 1: Cut the liver into chunks of 2×2 inch. Preheat the oven and keep to 250F, the lowest setting.
Step 2: Boil the liver by placing the chunks into a pot and add enough water covering the meat to boil. Place the pot on high. The liver chunks boil in 10 minutes time and cooks quickly. Next, remove it from the burner. Use kitchen tongs to remove the liver chunks and place them on paper towels to soak water and to cool.
Step 3: Slice into slivers the liver chunks
Then, dry effectively the liver. It should be cut into slivers smaller sizes. Cut the liver in uniform pieces and it will dry evenly. Take thick pieces of ¼”, put the slivers on an oiled cookie sheet and place in the preheated oven. In the oven, it takes 1.5 to 2 hours drying time, based on the pieces thickness.
Step 4: Drying the liver jerky dog treats
Finally, check the liver piece after an hour to ensure it is drying. The liver is done if it is not rubbery and comes as pieces on breaking it.
